Situated just off Buchanan Street in the heart of Glasgow's city centre, the Vienna Apartments features two phases of development – one is a new building that provides a total of 44 apartments, the other involves the refurbishment of a series of existing Victorian buildings, creating another 33 apartments. Both phases of the development were constructed over a ground floor that was given over to commercial use.
Part of the challenge of this exciting project was to try to transform this part of the city, which has suffered recently from a lack of new investment. The subtle urban development encompasses a series of internal courtyards as it connects two city streets at opposite sides of the block.
One of the impressive features of the development is the variation in both size and design of the apartments, from small studios to large loft style apartments.
DSSR undertook full design duties for building services planning, utilities and services distribution, lift traffic analysis, fire fighting and fire detection systems.
