The site for the Ravenscraig masterplan was home to a former steelworks. At 450 hectares, it is one of the largest brownfield sites in Europe. Wilson Bowden Developments, as part of the joint venture company Ravenscraig Ltd, were appointed as lead developers to drive forward the transformation of this huge derelict site into an exciting and innovative new community.
As an indication of the huge scale of the development, the proposal includes over 1 million sq ft of retail and leisure space, 3,500 new dwellings and 2.2 million sq ft of industry and office space, in addition to a range of community facilities including a new further education college, two new primary schools, an indoor sports arena and a new railway station.
Phase 1 infrastructure works are nearing completion, which will allow construction to begin on the first 800 homes, the new campus for Motherwell College and a sports facility. Phase 2 will include the proposed new town centre and a 1 million sq ft shopping centre.
DSSR liaised with utility companies to develop an overall utilities strategy for the 450 hectare site, resolving infrastructure for telecoms, gas, electrical and water supplies.
