Rackheath Eco-Town is a sustainable community where residents are expected to actively embrace the principles of a low-carbon lifestyle and be aware of their carbon footprint. Renewable technologies implemented on the project include wind turbines, biomass boilers, solar heating, photovoltaics, ground-source heat pumps and borehole cooling. The town also has a low energy vehicle strategy, utilising possible biofuel, electric or future hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
The eco-town has 5000 new homes, 2 primary schools, a secondary school, as well as a wide range of public facilities including a railway station, sports pitches, parks, allotments and a retail village.
DSSR is responsible for developing the integrated site power & energy strategy concepts and feasibility studies in advance of designing the full M&E services for the eco-town infrastructure, including the design of a biomass gasification energy centre and CHP to the eco-town.
