Built between 1906 and 1912, the Arnold Clark garage on Vinicombe Street, near Glasgow's Botanic Gardens, is one of the oldest surviving multi-storey garages anywhere in the world. A much-loved building, the garage is considered to be a special part of the city's heritage as a rare survivor of Glasgow's motoring age.
A report was produced showing that the original building was past its economic viability. A new proposal has been outlined to help preserve this rich piece of architectural heritage as part of a commercially viable development.
DSSR is working with Keppie Design, who has submitted plans to retain the art deco façade of the historic garage as part of a new residential development. The façade, which is A-listed, features original cream and green coloured tiles. The proposed design for 20 new flats also provides space for shops and two new restaurants.
