PRESTON OPERATIONS & CUSTODY SUITE

Preston Operations & Custody Suite sits on a brownfield site and involves both the conversion of an old warehouse building and new build construction. The new building incorporates a new 22 cell custody suite with ancillary accommodation, a secure van dock and a 40-space car park for operational vehicles. 500 sq m of office accommodation is also provided on the 2nd floor, with a raised access floor system supplying services to all the office areas. All secure custody spaces within the building meet the highest standards set by the Home Office and Metropolitan Police.

Within the warehouse building on the site, a new mezzanine floor has been inserted, providing 2000 sq m of additional floor area and creating a bright and modern office space, focused around a glazed 'street'.

As part of DSSR's ongoing drive towards sustainable and energy-efficient practices, natural methods for heating and cooling were optimised, making use of an intelligent ventilation system in the atrium space within the building. This helped to create a comfortable and balanced internal working environment within the secure site.

In addition to DSSR's involvement in the provision of all mechanical and electrical services on the project, which included a number of advanced automatic control systems, they were also responsible for the design and installation of the Building Management System in the building. The new building incorporates the Central Emergency Call Centre and disaster handling accommodation. These require 24 hour, 365 day operation with built-in redundancy and back-up installations, including diverse data, telephone and power installations.

With a focus on future running costs and maintenance amid tight cost restraints, the project was successfully completed on time and on budget.
