Barts and the London Hospital is the largest Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project in the world, and the biggest hospital development anywhere in the UK.
The project is split over two sites – the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London.
The state-of-the-art medical and teaching facility will be one of the leading specialist centres in the world, providing centres of excellence for cancer and cardiac care. Among other facilities the hospital will also provide an accident & emergency department with out-of-hours emergency walk-in facilities, a renal unit and a women and children's unit – London's second largest pediatric service. The two hospital sites will create a total of 1248 beds.
DSSR has been responsible for strategic design throughout the PFI bidding process and is now responsible for the full design of mechanical, electrical, public health and lift engineering services for The Royal London site, working as design consultants for Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil. Financial close for the project was reached in spring 2006, and the hospital is on schedule for 75% of the services to be in operation by 2012, with full site completion achieved by 2015.
