BEATSON CANCER CENTRE

The new state-of-the-art Beatson Cancer Centre was completed in 2008, providing a new regional cancer care unit for the West of Scotland. The centre offers 173 new beds and provides care for up to 60% of Scotland's total population.

DSSR was responsible for the complete design of all mechanical and electrical services at the Beatson. The design of ventilation systems was dictated by the fact that the hospital was required to be sealed for infection control. Air flow and air change rate calculations were carried out to establish the required levels of clean supply air and extract to create exact desired conditions for temperature and humidity control in clinical areas. Chilled beams have been used in non-clinical areas.

Construction work had to take into consideration complex site diversions on a live hospital campus – issues which were successfully resolved by a tight and well-managed construction programme.

The publicly funded project received additional input from charitable organisations, including Friends of the Beatson, Teenage Cancer Trust and MacMillan Cancer.
