17 secondary schools formed part of the government's South Lanarkshire Schools PFI programme, 15 of which were new build and 2 were refurbishments of existing schools. DSSR took the lead role in integration of building services for 11 of these schools. The £250m contract marked an important investment in the future of the Scottish education system.
Working closely with the architects on each school, DSSR's workable solutions for natural ventilation systems impacted on the resultant architectural design – the shape, orientation and location of windows were all critical to the scheme.
DSSR interfaced with 3 different teams of architects and structural engineers as part of the contract on South Lanarkshire Schools. As particularly successful examples of the PFI initiative, these projects demonstrated the ability of the design team to pull together to create more efficient buildings.
