Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Skye, with its spectacular coastal location, is the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture – the only higher education Gaelic college in the world, with students coming from as far afield as North America and Asia.
DSSR was part of the design team for a new Centre for Creative and Cultural industries, which would house a state-of-the-art television and broadcast studio, a community learning centre and offices for some existing projects, including the multi-media company Cànan. The new building also provides accommodation for a Gaelic childcare facility.
As part of the contract, a biomass district heating scheme was provided to serve the new and existing buildings, incorporating a central biomass boiler and distribution pipework to the various campus buildings.
The new centre was officially opened by First Minister Alex Salmond in 2008. In the future, it is intended to become part of a 21st century 'Highland Village' – a sustainable development built around the local community and driven by social, cultural and environmental interests, with the Gaelic university at the its heart.
