North West Kent College has undergone a huge regeneration project to replace existing buildings that were out-dated and inflexible. The redevelopment provided the opportunity to greatly improve the functionality, appearance and long-term value of the site. The purpose-built 20,000m2 college for Further Education was completed in 2010 at a total cost of £92m. With a high consideration for renewable energy technologies, lower energy requirements and lower maintenance costs, the building received a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.
DSSR was responsible for the design of all mechanical and electrical services, as well as specialising in high-voltage and lift design. DSSR also acted as sustainability consultants, responsible for the design and implementation of renewable energy systems. With the aid of advanced thermal modelling software, the team were able to produce a more energy-efficient building, and in turn reduce energy and maintenance costs – a sustainable practice that the university were pleased to promote as part of their new 21st century campus.
