The Lasswade Centre in Midlothian was the winner of the “Community Partnership of the Year Award” in the Scottish Property Awards 2014, for creating a new and exciting Community Hub that incorporated numerous community facilities on the site; Swimming Pool; Gymnastics Academy; Dance Studio; Fitness Suite; Community Library & Hall and crèche.
A unique feature of this new Community School is the inclusion of the Gymnastics Academy – a centre of excellence for gymnastics within the East of Scotland.
A central theatre / assembly hall facility forms the heart of the education block. The M&E design for this element allows for full flexibility of the space to be used for different uses and occupancies, with particular emphasis on suitable acoustic requirements and occupancy comfort. Consequently the concept is one of “Placemaking”. This is about creating an attractive, integrated, welcoming and safe environment for the whole community to access and enjoy. This is a place for education, sport, recreation, relaxation, contemplation, socialising and enjoying – a place where you want to be.
DSSR responsible for the full M&E Design and BREEAM Assessment. An EPC B+ rating and a BREEAM “excellent” rating were achieved, which largely determined the environmental solution for heating and ventilation. The plant rooms, service routes and riser sizes and locations have been tested, for both mechanical and electrical services. A CHP plant is utilised for the Lasswade Centre and sized to match the summer thermal load of the buildings. The power generated by the CHP will be fed back into the power distribution for the schools.
