Bourne Laboratory formed part of the Royal Holloway University of London's building and refurbishment programme, of which DSSR was involved as consulting engineers on several key projects.
The brief was to provide a modern science facility on the 120 acre campus at Egham that would accommodate a range of high-spec rooms including research laboratories, fume cupboard installations, autoclaves and constant temperature rooms.
The refurbishment of the Chemical Sciences buildings was a complex undertaking as the department had to remain in operation throughout construction. The project was phased in three stages.
For the new laboratory, DSSR worked with manufacturers to design a bespoke radiant panel heating system that was freely suspended and concealed all required services to create a strong visual design aesthetic while offering a practical solution to the high specification of services required in the building.
In total the project involved the installation of over 350 radiant heating panels, which needed to be configured in over 40 different ways.
